In a Christian funeral, the Church commends the dead person to God’s love and mercy. The mourners and the parish take leave of the one who has died and they pray for the deceased, accompanying them to the place where the body is buried or cremated. It is to praise God for the gift of eternal life given in the risen Christ.
The parish will help the family of the deceased to prepare the funeral and to arrange the liturgy. These decisions should not be made in advance with the funeral director. The parish is ready to assist in working out the form of the funeral rite, the music, whether the funeral liturgy will include a Mass, and so forth.
